Meet the woofer they will all be comparing themselves against-the JL Audio 10w7.
The 10w7 is one of JL Audio's most advanced subwoofers to date and feature six patented technologies that represent great advances in driver design. The design goals of these subwoofers were great: To combine superb sound quality and graceful linearity with raw power output on a never-before-seen level. They could have created a woofer that was simply loud and that would have required far less work, but it would not have been in keeping with the JL Audio philosophy of "sound quality first". They had to overcome many technical obstacles in order to make the 10w7 a reality.
On the power handling side of things, two new technologies were developed: a radially cross-drilled pole piece and a one of it's kind vented alloy frame that provides direct cooling to the top-plate of the driver. Very smart and practical. Combined with massive voice coils, these techniques deliver incredible power handling and prevent power compression effects from affecting sound quality in the least during listening.
The JL Audio 10w7's patented 'OverRoll' surround design permits the use of a large roll without a cone area penalty. Peak linear displacement is at least 90% greater than an ordinary W3 driver of that size, resulting in absolutely peak output potential. The design of the W7 takes an architectural approach to improving rigidity. The design is tough, sleek and very modern. A new W-Cone design achieves never-before-seen stiffness and rigidity without using heavy metal or composite materials. It also isolates the diaphragm in contact with the listening environment completely from the pressure in the enclosure, which minimizes cone deformation at the extreme output levels that the W7's can generate.
